He built up his own fortune by his own smarts and hard work. He is a man of power. His mutant powers may not be the flashiest, but Sebastian Shaw as faced off against the X-Men several times with neither side gaining an advantage. He is calculating, yet is aware of his own weaknesses. He uses his superior negotiation skills to surround himself with allies, though they often fall through. Shaw was once a decent man. When he met Tessa, she joined him because she saw the purity in his heart. He fought against Ned Buckham’s Hellfire Club because of the horrible atrocities he was doing to mutant kind. It is unknown what happened (retcon), but Sebastian Shaw was born into a very poor family in Pittsburg, Pennsylviania. Sebastian Shaw was an incredibly intelligent young man. His mutant powers manifested when his wit got the best of me and he was ambushed in a bar. Obviously, Shaw came out on top. Shaw’s father died while Shaw was getting his engineering degree, but Sebastian Hiram Shaw went on to become a millionaire by 30 and billionaire by 40. Shaw Industries, a munitions manufacturing company, caught the eye of Ned Buckman, White King of the Hellfire Club’s Counsel of the Chosen. Sebastian Shaw’s family had been among the founding members of the Hellfire Club, and with his refound wealth, he was the perfect addition to Buckman’s Counsel as Black Bishop. Around this time, Sebastian Shaw met a young mutant female known as Tessa in the Middle East. She became Sebastian Shaw’s personal assistant, using her mutant computer-like brain to analyze situations. Emma Frost also danced her way into the Hellfire Club. With the two telepaths at his disposal, it wasn’t hard for Shaw to learn of Ned Buckman’s involvement in Stephen Lang’s Project Armageddon. He was building Sentinel robots to ensure that humans ruled over mutant-kind. The White King was plotting to use Sebastian Shaw’s company to build these and succeeded. However, Buckman wasn’t aware of Frost, Tessa, and Shaw’s mutant powers. During this time, Sebastian Shaw was courting his fiancé, Loudres Chantel, during the release of these Sentinel robots. Loudres was murdered by the robots that Sebastian Shaw helped create. This caused Shaw to snap. He and Emma Frost formed a coup to destroy the Counsel of the Chosen. Frost used her telepathy to force Buckman to kill his own White Queen and then himself. With the entirety of the Counsel of the Chosen murdered, Shaw proclaimed himself as Black King with Frost as his White Queen. They renamed their Counsel the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club. Sebastian Shaw continued to manufacture Sentinels as it was more power under his control and he was making profit from their manufacture. In the public eye, this made Shaw in cahoots with anti-mutant leaders like Senator Robert Kelly and Gyrich, despite his mutant status. Sometime around this time, it was revealed that Shaw and his Inner Circle had been working with a powerful telepath named Elias Bogan. The often gambled at the Hollywood Hellfire Club Mansion. During one of the higher wagers, if Shaw lost, Emma Frost was to be Bogan’s. If Bogan lost, Sebastian Shaw would claim Elias’s wealth as his own. With Tessa’s advising, Sebastian Shaw was victorious. Bogan held a grudge against his assistant for years. A mutant named Mastermind, former member of Magneto’s Brotherhood, was seeking membership in Shaw’s Inner Circle. During this time, the Inner Circle began brainwashing the Phoenix possessing Jean Grey’s body by using Emma Frost’s powerhouse telepathy and Mastermind’s power of illusions. Unbeknownst to Mastermind, he was little more than a joke that the Inner Circle was manipulating for their own greed. The Phoenix became Black Queen after being seduced by the power and luxury the Hellfire Club guaranteed her. The plan backfired when power consumed the Phoenix, turning her into the Dark Phoenix. This placed the White Queen and the Phoenix butting heads. The Phoenix was testing Emma Frost’s powers, making her think they were evenly powered. When the White Queen felt things twisting in Phoenix’s favor, she mustered up every bit of her psychic power and used it all, causing a huge explosion, destroying the building. The Phoenix was the X-Men’s problem at that point. Emma Frost was believed to be dead, but Sebastian Shaw and Tessa helped nurse her out of a coma. Shortly after, a mysterious man named Friedrich von Roelm presented someone he was sponsoring as Black Queen. It seemed that Shaw was uninterested in giving away the position, but the woman, Selene, showcased her powers in an impressive display, capturing Shaw in stone. Shaw used his strength to break free, but felt as though the woman knew his weaknesses. Selene brought the gifts of Rachel Summers and Amara Aquila to him, causing a short battle with the X-Men. Selene forced her way into Shaw’s Inner Circle and made no secret that she wanted his position as head of the Club. Sometime during this time, Sebastian Shaw sought out to find a new King for the Hellfire Club’s powerbase. The three of them held a Grand Hellfire Gala, seeking out potential. Shaw explained to Emma Frost that he wanted something more… Regal. He wanted Namor to join as White King. Namor rejected, arrogantly and rudely. Sebastian Shaw was infuriated by his outright rejection and sent Emma Frost to infiltrate Alantis and mentally manipulate the Atlanteon. Emma Frost was gone for more than a week so he sent a new model of Sentinels to retrieve them, attacking Atlantis. Emma and Namor followed the Sentinels back to Shaw. Namor explained that it was an act of war, but Shaw was not afraid. Emma was furious at Shaw’s act against Namor, but Selene infiltrated Emma Frost’s mind and wiped her memory of the last few weeks. Namor wanted to kill Shaw, but Shaw stated that Namor would never even get close enough. Seeking revenge, Marvel Girl attacked Selene with the Phoenix, trying to kill her. Afterwards, Selene demanded the Inner Circle go after the girl. Shaw didn’t want to involve the Club as it seemed to be a personal attack, but Selene threatened Shaw’s ego and he had to prove he wasn’t cowardly. The Inner Circle sought out for the girl, placing them in direct battle with the X-Men. The fight was interrupted by a Sentinel from the future, calling itself Nimrod. Neither the X-Men or Hellfire Club were able to defeat Nimrod. It shot Sebastian Shaw into the upper atmosphere, and Leland, in is dying breath, increased Shaw’s mass, allowing him to fall and destroy the robot. The Black King and his two Queens were fearful after the attack. The Black Rook and Black Bishop were murdered during the attack, and they needed more power in their ranks in case Nimrod returned. Shaw invited the then Headmaster of Xavier’s Institute to join as White King. Magneto and Storm were to use the power for the X-Men’s goals. Soon, Madelyne Pryor’s Inferno broke loose. The four Lords Cardinal watched as New York shifted and contorted under the Goblyn Queen’s power. They watched as demons dragged Colossus away and saw the original members of the X-Men, X-Factor, who were believed to be dead. The demon responsible for the Goblyn Queen, Sym, attempted to strike a deal with the Lords Cardinal, as he knew what power was behind the four of them. Inferno fell apart before anything came of it. Sometime later, tensions among the club came to a head between the Black King and White King. With Selene’s vote, Sebastian Shaw was ousted from his position. Sebastian Shaw took a vacation at Interlaken, Switzerland where Shinobi Shaw, Sebastian’s son of Asian descent, revealed that he had acquired Shaw Industries via hostile takeover. Shinobi then murdered his father in an overpowering explosion. Shinobi went on to create his own Inner Circle after the Upstarts took out the remaining members of the Lords Cardinal. Sebastian Shaw was, of course, not dead. He absorbed the impact and sought out Shinobi. It was much later revealed that Sebastian Shaw murdered his own son for his betrayal. During this time, Sebastian Shaw focused on his Asian business to maintain his fortune. While recuperating, Sebastian Shaw came into contact with the mutant known as Holocaust. Realigning with Tessa, Sebastian Shaw and Tessa were able to mentally manipulate the mutant until Onslaught took Holocaust. Holocaust helped Shaw defeat X-Force in exchange for a containment suit. With Onslaught and the rise of Operation Zero Tolerance, Selene appeared to Shaw and Tessa on a yacht with Trevor Fitzroy, the man responsible for putting Emma Frost in a coma and murdering her Hellions, and an amnesiac Madelyne Pryor. Shaw wanted nothing to do with the former Black Queen. Tessa reminded Shaw of who the redhead truly was, and Shaw was intrigued. The Hellfire Club was back into full swing as Madelyne Pryor proved herself worthy by separating Scribe from Mountjoy during a test battle. Sebastian Shaw is intrigued by Madelyne and they begin having an affair. Selene, the Black Queen, was worried for her position. Tessa was worried for their safety after the chaos the Goblyn Queen once caused. It didn’t take long for the Inner Circle to begin plotting against Sebastian Shaw and his new Queen. The Inner Circle plotted to use Apocalypse’s technology, but Madelyne betrayed Shaw by revealing his plans to her son, Cable. She left the Inner Circle. After this, Sebastian Shaw was active in finding the cure for the Legacy Virus as was his Black Queen, but the two acted against one another. Finally, Selene had enough of Shaw and Tessa, ousting them from her Hellfire Club as she had usurped enough power. She no longer needed them after destroying the Externals. Sebastian Shaw was scorned and Tessa betrayed him, revealing her allegiance to the X-Men. He vowed revenge against her. As “Sage” took off with the X-Treme X-Men to find Destiny’s Diaries, Sebastian Shaw made an alliance with Lady Mastermind, perhaps the most powerful illusion manipulating mutant. He used her to get Sage alone so that he could exact his revenge, but Sage was not defenseless and Shaw was defeated. After Selene and Blackheart were banished, Sebastian Shaw reclaimed his position as Black King. He used telepathic dancers to learn secrets of the Hellfire Club members and sold them to the highest bidder. Sebastian Shaw sought to fill the ranks of the Lords Cardinal once more. He offered Roberto DaCosta an opportunity to rule the Inner Circle and boost himself to the position of Lord Imperial. Sebastian Shaw offered to use the Club’s power for good. He offered Tessa this power, and she didn’t refuse. She was once again his assistant, but she was aware of the evil below the surface. Curious of Sage’s disappearance, the X-Men followed her path to the New York Hellfire Mansion. There, Emma Frost showed them a teleportation device in the building next door. The team was separated by Sage. Half of them were sent to infiltrate Courtney Ross, the newly crowned White Queen, and Viper. They were infiltrating a mutant slave auction that apparently Courtney Ross was also trying to put a stop to. The other half was sent to the Los Angeles Hellfire Club where Tessa, Sunspot, and Shaw were waiting. Shaw explained his move to Storm, but Storm was furious at Sage for her actions. The party was cut short as Donald Pierce and some specially trained force of men attacked, subduing them. Pierce and Wolverine battled with Wolverine quickly losing until Storm and Tessa freed Shaw. Sebastian Shaw decapitated Pierce quickly, while wounded severely. He cried out to Tessa, knowing that she knew Pierce would attack and didn’t warn him.
