A beautiful new day was dawning over Asgard. Odin had fallen into the Odinsleep and Thor was set to take the crown. A great feast was preparing to begin in the fabled halls of Asgard in celebration of this. However down in the depths of Asgard oceans, far more important work was being finished at last.
Ulfric Serpentson smiled as he looked upon his creation. A portal stable enough to travel to any realm in almost any plane of existence, created with the aid of his much beloved cousin Loki. Gone where the days of utilising the byfrost as a means of transportation and now a new dawn had indeed come. The webway was finally completed and stable.
"Haha! And they all said this manner of transit was impossible." Ulfric scoffed in triumph.
Ulfric motioned to a squidlike humanoid in armour similar to his own and said "Goreteg, bring me a drink. This is true cause for celebrations!"
The being raised one hand and a mug of ale appeared in the Serpentson's hand. He took a few long strides to the top of the steps in his throne room and took his seat in the stone chair. Holding his trident in his vice like grip as ever, he motioned to the creature again. "Send for Loki. Send for my cousin so he might know our work is done!"

Loki had returned to Asgard after divesting himself of that rabid dog Sabretooth and the less than convivial Cailleach. The Celts, in general, drove him mad, but she was more insane than the rest of her clan. Then again, she was likely from some alternate realm or was a clone dropped on the world by Mister Sinister. His absence on the world stage did not bother Loki one bit.
Going to see Ulfric, on the other hand, brought him a sense of happiness that he did not often find in Midgard.
"Ulfric, I heed your summons. What great wonder do you have to show me?" he asked as he walked to the throne his cousin sat upon. "You know, it's a wonder you haven't gone to Midgard yourself. Sif seems to have taken up residence there with my niece Alexia. I for one am glad she is not being trained solely by her Celtic clan. Karenza can be a tad pushy in these matters."

A huge grin spread over the bearded god's scarred face. It seemed like it had been an eternity since he had felt truly happy or accomplished. Rising from his throne he strode down the stone steps and embraced Loki in a mighty bear hug.
Laughing aloud he boomed "Cousin! It has been too long since we last spoke! The webway is completed. The byfrost is obsolete and we will have the glory we are owed at last!"
Ulfric released his cousin as a slightly less confident smile invaded his features. "Midgard can wait a while longer I think... How fares the lady Sif?" his tone faltered despite his attempts to hide it. "I'm sure we will see the majority of our kin at the coronation" he said dismissively.

Loki knew all too well that Ulfric fancied Sif, and on many occasions he baited his cousin about his crush. "She is, how shall I put this, living in this very small place the Celts think a mansion, but she has been keeping her mind to training Alexia and fending off advances of the dragon riders and seamen that call the Clan MacFeorais their own. She'd best most of them in combat, and I doubt their fragile egos could take the pain."
The Trickster started to laugh as he thought about one of the MacFeorais men, the one named Donal, and how ridiculous he was regarding Sif. "Sorry, but one in particular made a buffoon of himself. No match for the likes of you, cousin, so rest easy. Sif will be back, with the good Alexia in tow, for the coronation."
As he looked at this webway Ulfric had built, Loki stopped for a moment and glanced around him. "Has Heimdall come to see your great work?"

Ulfric sighed at the prospect of having to inform Heimdall That his duties would be lessened by the webways creation.
"Not many of our kin come down to see me anymore. Not even Thor who used to visit so regularly. I find myself with only the deep ones for company when you do not visit cousin."
Retrieving his trident from its place next to the throne, Ulfric pointed it at the archway in the Center of the room. It crackled and hummed into life as a whirling blue energy twisted within it.
Nodding to Loki he said "I believe this will be a suitably dramatic entry for the two of us. Assuming you have no other matters we must attend to before the feast?"
Ulfric often wondered if Loki would one day try to usurp Thor once again. Knowing he would be reluctant to assist but likely would anyway for the love he bore his cousin.

"No, I have no other duties to attend to before the celebration," Loki said in reply to Ulfric's question. He pondered his cousin's comment about Thor for a moment as he watched the archway's glow. "And as for my brother, he might be checking up on any of his charges on Midgard at the moment, or he might be seeing to Alexia's training himself. He has been a bit preoccupied of late, but that is no real excuse for him staying away from you so long, Ulfric, especially with your great work now ready for viewing."
Loki kept watching the energy spark and swirl as he stood with his cousin. "For all I know, Thor might be making it very clear to his Avengers brethren that their presence at the ceremony is not welcome. They do not understand our ways, and I would be very surprised if Thor extended an invitation to any of them."
It was then that Loki got a very odd look on his face. "That, of course, doesn't mean he won't invite Alexia's other family. At least they respect our traditions and likely would not act like oafs at the coronation. At least I pray they would! I'd best not worry about it until it happens. Cousin, shall we?" Loki asked as he motioned toward the archway.

Ulfric held out his hand to his trident as it vibrated and flew to his grasp. Dipping the tip of the trident into the whirling energy it became calm and flat, almost resembling a mirror, though it was quite clear that Asgard's throne room was displayed within it.
"Come Loki. It's perfectly safe." he said as he boldly stepped towards the image.
As Ulfric stepped through the archway, the mirror rippled and allowed him to pass through. Ulfric was clearly standing beyond the arch, within the throne room. Smiling at someone unseen to his left, he let out a booming greeting. "Ha! Bori! How many tankards of ale must you drink before the festivities begin?"
Ulfric turned around to the now unseen doorway, knowing his cousin could see him and beckoned him forwards.

Loki looked at the portal, and he could not help but think of the great love the Celts had for magic waters and mirrors as means of teleportation. He nodded to Ulfric and started to step through the archway. Within seconds he was in the throne room. "That was wonderful, cousin!" Loki said as he slapped Ulfric on the back.
In the back of Loki's mind, the thought of Thor becoming the ruler of Asgard was a bitter pill to swallow, but the Trickster also knew that Thor could grow restless and step away from his duties eventually. That could leave a vacuum for Loki to step into, but that day was not today.
"What is that?" Loki asked as he looked across the throne room to a very large golden crate. "Cousin, perhaps we should see what gifts are being sent for our new ruler? I do not want to entertain the thought that someone could be sending a Trojan horse to this celebration, but one cannot be too careful. It is likely from Alexia's family, but I wish to make certain it is not something sinister."

Ulfric looked at the packages intended for Thor and pondered Loki's words. Deciding it would be best to at least vet the presents for any nasty surprises, he pointed his trident toward the gifts. Nothing happened.
Laughing to himself, Ulfric said "Nothing living in there cousin. There is no water content."
As he lowered his weapon, food and ale began to be brought through the hall and musical horns Announced the arrival of more Asgardians. "Ah! Good! Our kin approach!"
