AFTER YOU FLEE
CHAPTER 1
The sight of a diamond necklace caused Wendell Lewis to smile from ear to ear. A pretty for a poverty-stricken man. He wiggled his fingers near a woman as he followed her. He snatched the necklace and admired it. Wendell heard footsteps prior to a new frown. After blinking twice, he looked back.
Two men glowered and focused on Wendell.
''Return the necklace to the woman this instant!''
Wendell began to scowl at the men. He never had valuables when he was a boy. He barely had enough food, clothing, shelter, etc. Wendell stepped back. His scowl remained. ''Never!''
Wendell turned and ran by the woman. New footsteps never caused him to look back. There was another glance at the necklace.
One new smile formed on Wendell's face. He saw one alley, but the men were too close. At least based on their footsteps.
Wendell's eyes were wide the minute a fist struck his back. He winced after he fell forward and contacted the ground. The necklace was released. Wendell sat up and watched while one of the men lifted the necklace.
''I'm going to find the woman and return this to her,'' the man said to his companion.
The other man nodded. ''I'll wait for you here.'' The man began to glance at Wendell. A corner of his mouth went up.
He held up a palm and punched it. ''You won't steal anything again!'' he said.
Wendell stood before he fled. He refused to look back.
Eyes settled on a sewer before it was entered.
CHAPTER 2
Wendell found himself in a dark tunnel. There was a slight pause. He began to lean against a wall. There weren't footsteps any longer. Wendell's shoulders slumped for a few moments. His body tensed the second he heard the sound of a snarl. He gasped and looked to one side.
One alligator viewed Wendell and continued to snarl.
''I'm not here to harm you. I'm not. I'm not,'' Wendell said in a sincere tone. He started to tilt his head to one side after the alligator ceased snarling. Wendell crouched in front of it. He extended his arm.
The alligator was curious as it approached Wendell. It was no longer territorial before it wagged its tail.
Wendell smiled and laughed in a gentle tone.
There was another glance at the dark tunnel. Laughter ended before a new scowl materialized on Wendell's face. He ceased crouching. Although there weren't footsteps any longer, worry formed in his eyes. Society already shunned him. He was certain the men were going to kill him the second he appeared above the sewer.
Eyes were on the alligator.
''You'll protect me from enemies?'' Wendell's smile returned after the alligator's tail wagged another time. A different scowl replaced it. He had to figure out how to survive. How was he going to obtain food and clothing? His eyes were on the alligator again. There was another smile.
''A new pet.''
The alligator wagged its tail again.
CHAPTER 3
Wendell began to wander the sewer with his new animal companion. If the men tried to attack him under the streets? Wendell glanced at the alligator and still smiled. After looking ahead, he frowned and paused. His eyes were wide as soon as two alligators appeared and snarled. Were they going to be stray animals or new pets?
The alligator stood in front of Wendell before it snarled at the other animals.
Wendell smiled again. ''You're protecting me already,'' he said. Wendell viewed the other alligators relaxing. ''I'm a friend. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.''
The alligators walked to Wendell and wagged their tails.
''New pets. Wonderful!'' There was another laugh. Wendell began to walk ahead of the alligators. There weren't other footsteps. Perhaps the men forgot about him.
Wendell stretched his arms before he and his alligators walked into a small area. ''A nap. Just until I figure out how to adjust to life below the streets,'' Wendell said to them. New footsteps were why his eyes were wide another time. *The men found me?* he thought. A new glance at the alligators. ''You'll protect me.''
The alligators wagged their tails together.
Footsteps stopped before Wendell shrugged. He glanced back. Eyes widened as soon as he viewed a small form wearing a green cloak.
The figure's arm was near his pocket. *Another thief?* He seized the figure's wrist. The hood was lowered.
Wendell gasped at the sight of a young face. He released the wide-eyed girl. He followed her after she ran. Wendell found himself in a large chamber. His eyes remained on the girl before she approached many other children. He was shocked with them. Wendell stepped back.
*Homeless children?*
CHAPTER 4
Two girls held one another's arms and tensed. Four boys trembled.
Wendell wasn't certain if the children were frightened due to the alligators or him. Perhaps both.
Wendell held up his empty palms. ''I'm homeless as well. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes,'' he said.
Children exchanged glances and approached Wendell with caution.
''We should stick together.'' Wendell turned from the children to the chamber. He was never able to return to the streets. There was a new glance at the children. Although Wendell couldn't appear above the sewer, the children could. Ways to obtain food and clothing. Perhaps lots and lots of necklaces. Rings.
Wendell was going to rule below the streets. No. The Sewer King. The Sewer King was going to rule below the streets. Children were his thieves. Alligators were going to remain his pets. His pretty pets.
CHAPTER 5
Three days later, the Sewer King scowled and paced in front of many children. ''I took you in. I fed you. I clothed you. Yes. Yes. Yes,'' he said.
The Sewer King ceased pacing and turned to the children. ''You never obtained lots and lots of pretties for your king.'' He still scowled. ''ALL OF YOU! TO THE STREETS THIS INSTANT!'' The Sewer King viewed his children stepping back with wide eyes. ''Obtain lots and lots of pretties this time. GO!''
Children ran.
The Sewer King walked to three alligators. A new smile materialized. ''You never cause me distress. Never. Never. Never.''
A way to pass the time until children returned? Perhaps a stroll. The Sewer King focused on the alligators. He still smiled. ''I'll return as soon as possible. Hopefully my children are able to return as soon as possible.'' He abandoned the alligators.
After stepping into a tunnel, the Sewer King heard a few footsteps. He started to blink three times. ''My children returned to me? They're usually fast. Not this fast.'' He followed the footsteps and paused.
The Sewer King gasped and stepped back at the same time.
CHAPTER 6
''We found you!'' a man said as he stood near his friend. He smiled and approached the Sewer King slowly. ''The woman was so happy when we returned her necklace. We never mentioned you. Why cause tears?'' He continued to approach the Sewer King.
''We'll cause your tears,'' the other man said.
The Sewer King turned and fled. His pets weren't present to protect him. His children were long gone. He heard their footsteps another time. *I'll perish here. Yes. Yes. Yes.*
The Sewer King fell forward and collapsed. His head contacted the ground. He cried out before he closed his eyes.
A few minutes later, the Sewer King sat up. He stood and looked back. His eyes widened with every passing second. The Sewer King shook his head in disbelief. His still body was near the men. His spirit shook his head again. He finally shrugged and vanished.
Previous thoughts. *I'll perish here. Yes. Yes. Yes.*
THE END
THE EGGS
The Sewer King smiled as he viewed a mother alligator near her nest. ''New pets,'' he said after he focused on many eggs. He began to laugh in a gentle tone. The Sewer King stretched his arm near the alligator's snout to scratch it. He heard her while she snarled. Eyes were wide the minute she bit his trousers and yanked.
The Sewer King blinked repeatedly after he viewed his blue boxers. A scowl formed for a second before he pulled his trousers up.
The alligator ceased snarling. She began to rest and writhe. She saw worry in the Sewer King's eyes.
*Sick pets?* The Sewer King thought he heard footsteps and looked back. His children returned from picking pockets? Perhaps he imagined footsteps. The Sewer King turned to the alligator another time. His eyes flew open at the sight of her still body.
*I didn't know until now* the Sewer King thought. One glance from the alligator to the eggs. Tears formed in the Sewer King's eyes.
He heard footsteps another time and glanced back. The Sewer King saw six children with a few jewels. He turned to face them.
Jewels weren't important to the Sewer King any longer. He scowled at his children before they ran from him.
The Sewer King was willing to replace the mother alligator. Willing to protect eggs.
THE END
USUALLY GUESS
CHAPTER 1
The Sewer King glowered and walked by many shops. He remembered waiting for his many children to return from stealing lots and lots of pretties recently. The other memory? His body trembling with rage. The Sewer King was never willing to return to the streets. Return to the ones attacking a poverty-stricken man two weeks ago. Throwing sticks at him. Forcing him to flee to the sewer. Forcing him to use children to pick pockets.
The Sewer King glanced at the dark sky. At least the sun wasn't present. The light capable of hurting his eyes. Causing him to weaken for a short time.
The Sewer King's eyes were on empty streets. One corner of his mouth went up. Perhaps he was able to find his children without others shunning him another time. So he guessed.
*Most people are going to hurt a poverty-stricken man again. Yes. Yes. Yes. They are. They are.*
The sight of a well-dressed man was why the Sewer King tilted his head to one side.
Glowering again, the Sewer King tensed. He watched while the man carried three wrapped boxes by buildings. *The man is too busy to attack me. Yes. Yes. Yes. He is. He is.*
One new smile appeared on the Sewer King's face. Perhaps the man was also too busy to notice him picking pockets. Stealing any pretties. The Sewer King followed the man. He wiggled his fingers near him. He blinked repeatedly after he heard footsteps. One glance back.
Three young men stood near the Sewer King and smiled. Expressions of people up to no good. Expressions of people wishing to hurt others.
''You're not going to pick pockets when you're unconscious,'' one man said to the wide-eyed Sewer King.
The two other men struck their palms.
CHAPTER 2
''I have to steal. I HAVE TO!'' the Sewer King said. He watched as the men frowned and exchanged glances. He walked back while they approached him.
A man raised his fist and brought it back. His eyes were wide the minute a hand caught his fist. He saw the Sewer King's matching expression.
*The man carrying the boxes earlier?* the Sewer King thought. He stumbled and fell on his side. The Sewer King winced before he viewed the man releasing the fist. *Hm?* he thought as the trembling men ran.
''I'm Alfred Pennyworth. Are you alright?'' Alfred extended a hand after the Sewer King nodded. There was concern in his eyes.
There was another glance back. The Sewer King faced the boxes on the ground. After turning to Alfred, he took the latter's hand. He wrapped his arm around Alfred's waist and released him. The Sewer King smiled and nodded at the same time. ''Many thanks,'' he said.
The Sewer King abandoned Alfred. He decided to return to the sewer. Perhaps his children were already under the streets.
So he guessed. Not every person wished to attack him. So he guessed.
The Sewer King held the watch he took out of Alfred's coat earlier. The watch he removed when he wrapped his arm around the other man's waist. His smile returned slowly. ''Many thanks,'' the Sewer King said before he laughed in a loud tone.

Reverend Amos Howell frowned as he approached three people near a farm in Smallville. ''Unity should be good for everyone,'' he said to them. He watched while they exchanged glances. ''Unity is bliss.'' One corner of his mouth went up after they shrugged. He was followed into a tent and continued to smile the minute they viewed an alien with many eyes and tentacles. ''Unity is bliss.''
Reverend Amos Howell viewed Unity using three tentacles to pierce the new arrivals and control them. His eyes were on many other victims of Unity in the tent. ''I'll lure others to you,'' he said to his master.
''You're useless.''
After blinking, Reverend Amos Howell tilted his head to one side. He followed Unity and the other victims out of the tent.
''You're abandoning me?''
''Correct. There are plenty of others for me to control. To send to lure extra humans to me.''
Tears formed in Reverend Amos Howell's eyes and streamed down his face after Unity abandoned him. A scowl formed as his body tensed.
He always obeyed his master and his reward? Being abandoned. Although he was a traveler, he still desired shelter. He wandered and found himself near a farm. Reverend Amos Howell approached a door before he knocked. He watched while the door was opened and a woman appeared.
''Reverend Amos Howell. Life isn't kind to me for now. Perhaps shelter for some time?''
''Martha Kent. Please step inside.''
The memory ended before Reverend Amos Howell tried to feed every chicken. The chickens weren't interested in food. Reverend Amos Howell pursued a few chickens, but they were too fast. Frowning, he turned to Martha's foster daughter. He shrugged near Kara. He shook his head in disbelief.
*I'm able to gather many people for Unity to control, but I can't feed one chicken.*

NEVER HARM KARA'S FAMILY
CHAPTER 1
Reverend Amos Howell turned to Kara as he carried bags with her. ''Are Jonathan and Martha going to ask us to run new errands when we return to their farm? Maybe they'll forget something after we place the bags in the kitchen?''
Kara shrugged. A new smile materialized on her face. ''Let's go to Metropolis tomorrow. We can shop,'' she said.
Reverend Amos Howell frowned. He nodded at their bags. ''We already shopped.'' He saw Kara's sudden frown.
''We can shop for fun stuff.''
''I suppose.'' Reverend Amos Howell looked back after he thought he heard footsteps. He never viewed anything. He shrugged and looked ahead another time. Reverend Amos Howell faced Kara again. His eyes were on her sudden expression of concern.
''I thought someone followed us,'' Amos said.
''Are you expecting someone to attack us?''
''Perhaps.''
''Why would someone attack us?'' Kara asked.
''Perhaps teens from the city looking for something to do,'' Amos muttered.
One of Kara's eyebrows went up.
CHAPTER 2
Amos glanced back again and scowled. If someone tried to attack his foster family? A grin literally stretched his face down.
Amos usually never assumed his alien form. Too painful. For Kara? For Martha and Jonathan Kent? He was willing to tear his human form apart. Willing to suffer.
''We'll be fine,'' Kara said to Amos. She watched while he looked ahead another time. Something struck her back before she cried out.
Kara released the bag and dropped it. She winced the minute she fell on her side. She turned to Amos and saw rare concern in his eyes.
After dropping the bag, Amos ran to Kara. Another scowl appeared. How could he be so careless? He was going to protect Kara this time.
Amos viewed Kara standing and heard footsteps again. His eyes were wide as soon as four teens appeared. They settled on a chain. The reason why Kara was knocked down. His body tensed. A new scowl formed on his face.
The boys smiled and approached Amos.
''Preacher, that's a nice hat.''
Amos adjusted his wide-brimmed hat and stepped back.
''The waist-length hair? How about a trim?''
''Preacher, what are you going to do? Mention fire?''
''Hurting a preacher should be fun,'' another teen said.
CHAPTER 3
Amos watched while one teen began to swing the chain above his head. He stepped to the side after the chain was brought down.
Amos smiled before a teen's fist struck his chest. Eyes widened again. He winced prior to stepping back. There was another scowl.
''This is fun,'' the happy teen said.
Amos was punched again before he was knocked back. Concern formed in his eyes another time after he remembered Kara. One glance back. Eyes were on Kara while she dodged a teen's kick. A rare gentle smile formed. *Kara is going to be fine.*
Another punch knocked Amos back again. A different scowl replaced his smile. Amos turned to the teen. Although he assumed Kara was going to be okay, he still wished to protect her.
Amos opened his mouth before a tentacle emerged from it. The teen's wide eyes never bothered him. He wasn't going to enjoy his final moments alive.
The teen dodged the tentacle after it extended. He saw the latter's big eyes. The teen ran to Amos and raised his fist. He attempted to attack him another time.
CHAPTER 4
Amos gasped with the teen as soon as Kara appeared in front of him. He viewed her fingers around the fist. Amos blinked when Kara kicked the teen back and knocked him down. He turned to another teen before the tentacle extended again. The tentacle struck the teen's arm. He smiled and stepped to the side again after his enemy cried out. He bowed near Kara.
After nodding, Kara used her fist to strike the teen's other arm and knock him down.
Every teen stood and ran to one another with wide eyes. They began to tremble at the same time.
Kara's smile came back. She used one fist to strike her palm as she held one arm up. She viewed the teens fleeing. Kara faced Amos. ''Thanks for trying to protect me.'' Her eyes were on his new smile and nod.
Kara and Amos walked to a farm before they viewed Martha Kent standing in a kitchen.
''I thought you shopped earlier,'' Martha said as she tilted her head to one side. She saw their wide eyes before they exchanged glances.
Kara's shoulders slumped before Amos imitated her. They went outside to obtain the bags they never remembered until recently.
